Roman Alfafara Sarmiento
(9-May-1908 – 1974
Son of Matias Villanueva Sarmiento and Eugenia Poncardas Alfafara.
Sculptor;
Earlier sculptural and statuary masterpieces that one sees in Carcar were Roman Sarmiento’s works: per his grandson Julius Sarmiento, the rotunda itself, and in the plaza, the Ave Maria, the globe in the Barangay monument, the Mariano Mercado full body at the Dispensary, the Padre del Corro bust that used to front the Patria now at St. Catherine’s College (why the college couldn’t commission its own is beyond me), the low relief Stations of the Cross in the church that looks European in concept and quality, even the cement plant vases around the plaza, and the Leon Kilat Monument; the Urgello mausoleum at the old cemetery; should be a National Artist nominee at least; great-grandson of namesake Roman Sarmiento of the Carcar Tisà house.
Married to Pascuala (Cristita) Montesclaros
