Carcar parish priests

Parish Priests of Carcar

Facing up to the Carcar church for some months now, one will not miss two big horizontal slabs of black marble (granite?) on both frontages. While the left tells of a short history of the edifice, the one on the right serves as a plaque etched with the list of the priests who had served as Carcar parish priest.

The list was based on what first appeared in a Carcar fiesta souvenir program in 1950 as compiled by then Municipal Secretary Galileo Varga. The published list did not state the source of Varga. The souvenir program for fiesta 2009 carried a continuation of the list.

The priests in that listing start only from 22 August 1759. Since it is well known that Carcar had been a parish a hundred and fifty-some years before that, there must have been many more curas than these. Carcar history writer Jerry Martin Alfafara was asked by the parish priest to dig what he could find about this and he did manage to come up with a list which started from 1607 up to 1665, albeit the exact dates for their respective terms could no longer be determined. And, ending as it did in 1665, even Jerry Martin’s detective work still failed to fill the gap between 1665 and 1759 – 94 years. But from which old tracts he got it, still our knowledge was in fact expanded by this Alfafara list.

Anyway, despite Alfafara’s yoeman’s effort, some decision must have been reached and what finally (and permanently) appeared in the granite was 1759, the Varga list plus the 2009 addition.

In recognition of Alfafara’s efforts, however, I must bring up his list here. (diacritical marks are mine as are the abbreviations denoting religious congregations and some contemporary spellings of names)

Additions and corrections to this list are most welcome.
