Lt. Gen. Gumersindo Tapia Yap

Son of Porfirio Castillo Yap from Cebu City and Carcar and Mercedes Gerasta Tapia of San Fernando.

Lieutenant General[1], AFP; O-4475.

Top junior tennis player in Carcar; high school salutatorian, Carcar Academy 1954; PMA 1960 (no. 10 of 60), Army officer, served in Vietnam; as lieutenant general, the highest rank in the AFP achieved by a Carcaranon as Commanding General of the AFP Southern Command (entire Mindanao); rare achievement of having commanded three of the 8 (then) infantry divisions of the Phil. Army–the 3rd (Western and Central Visayas), 1st (Zamboanga peninsula) and 6th (Central Mindanao); the Northern Luzon Command (1990) and the Southern Command 1991 to 1993; after retirement was class president, PMA Class 1960 for several years; Chairman, PMA Alumni Association, 2009-2010 but was not able to finish his term; buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani near the grave of another Carcaranon, Brig. Gen. Alfonso Alcoseba.

Married to Dr. Juliet Batisan Aliga from Nueva Ecija with 4 children.

[1]Lieutenant General rank also attained next by Raul Sacedon Urgello (b. 1943) as Philippine Army commander and then by Allan Dayanan Cabalquinto (b. 1950) of the AFP National Capital Region Command.

  2. Gen. Yap looked very much my father’s (Juan Yap) brother, Galicano, the late judge of Ronda, Cebu.

    • Hello there! My great grandfather is Juan Yap (luanluan,carcar). I found a picture of his brother but I don’t know his name. I wanted to trace his descendants.

  3. I didnt know that my boss Sir General Yap has joined the creator on 2009.. he was almost my 2nd Dad.. my belated Prayers and Condolences to the Family..
